Regimental Support Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment
"Muleskinner Squadron"

The Regimental Support Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment was formed on 11 November 1977, on the order of the 57th Colonel of the Regiment, Colonel C. Lutz, and given the mission of executing logistical operations for the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment. The Support Squadron promptly adopted the nickname "Muleskinner" from the original teamsters who conducted logistical operations by wagon trains for the Regiment of Mounted Riflemen during its early years.

On 1 October 1985, FORSCOM Headquarters formally activated the Support Squadron with a Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, Maintenance Troop, and Supply and Transportation Troop. The Medical Troop was formally activated and assigned to the Squadron on 5 August 1986. The 89th Chemical Company (Smoke/Recon/Decon) was activated and assigned in August of 1987. K Company, 158th Aviation Regiment was reflagged as a member of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment and attached to Muleskinner Squadron on 22 September 1997. This company became the Aviation Intermediate Maintenance Troop for the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment. As part of the modular reorganization beginning in 2006, the AVIM Troop was reassigned to the reorganized 4th Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment.

The Squadron had a history of successfully supporting the Regiment since its inception in 1977. It deployed with the Regiment to Saudi Arabia during the months of September and October 1990, to provide logistical support during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. The arrival of the "Muleskinners" in Bosnia as part of SFOR7 continued its proud tradition of deploying wherever the Regiment was deployed, and providing the continuous, uninterrupted logistical support necessary to accomplish any mission.
