33rd Area Support Group

The 33rd Area Support Group serves as a command and control organization for most units in the northern half of the State of Illinois. The mission of the 33d Area Support Group is to logistically support and maintain units entering and passing through the ASG Area within the Theater rear area. The three major functions of the 33d Area Support Group are logistics, maintenance, and transportation.

The 33rd Area Support Group was originally constituted on 18 July 1917 in the National Guard as Headquarters, 33d Division to be organized with troops from Illinois). It organized on 27 August 1917 at Camp Logan, TX. It was demobilized on 6 June 1919 at Camp Grant, IL.

Reorganized and Federally recognized on 13 December 1923 in the Illinois National Guard at Chicago, the Headquarters Detachment was organized and Federally recognized on 19 July 1927 at Chicago.

Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 33d Division, was inducted into Federal service 5 March 1941 at Chicago. It was reorganized and redesignated on 21 February 1942 as Headquarters, 33d Infantry Division. It inactivated on 5 February 1946 in Japan.

It was reorganized and Federally recognized on 7 November 1946 at Chicago. It relocated on 1 March 1954 to Urbana (Headquarters Company, 33d Infantry Division, was organized on 1 March 1969 at Urbana).

Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 33d Infantry Division, reorganized and was redesignated on 1 February 1968 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 33d Infantry Brigade, and relocated to Chicago (Headquarters Company, 33d Infantry Brigade, concurrently consolidated with Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 33d Infantry Division Artillery, and Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Brigade, 33d Infantry Division, and the consolidated unit designated as Headquarters Company, 33d Infantry Brigade).

Headquarters, 33d Infantry Brigade (Separate) was reorganized to form Headquarters, 33d Area Suport Group. In order to fit into the changing modern Army, the Headquarters, 33d Infantry Brigade (Separate) reorganzed to form the Headquarters, 33d Area Suport Group. The 33d Area Support Group continued the tradition and lineage which began in August 1917 with the 33d Infantry Division. The 33d Area Support Group continued to serve as a command and control organization for most units in the northern half of the State of Illinois.
