3rd Battalion, 62nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment
The 3rd Battalion, 62nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment, was originally constituted on 1 August 1921 in the Regular Army as the 2nd Antiaircraft Artillery battalion. It was organized 4 September 1921 at Fort Totten, New York, from existing units. It was subsequently redesignated on 1 June 1922 as the 62nd Artillery Battalion (Antiaircraft), Coast Artillery Corps, and on 1 July 1924 as the 62nd Coast Artillery.
The Regiment was broken up on 24 March 1944 and its elements reorganized and redesignated as follows: Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 80th Antiaircraft Group; 1st Battalion as the 62nd Antiaircraft Artillery Gun Battalion; 2nd Battalion as the 893rd Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion; and 3rd Battalion as the 331st Antiaircraft Artillery Searchlight Battalion.
After 24 March 1944 the above units underwent changes as follows: Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 80th Antiaircraft Artillery Group, inactivated on 14 December 1945 in Germany. It reactivated on 20 December 1948 at Fort Bliss, Texas, and was redesignated on 20 March 1958 as Headquarters and Headquarters battery, 80th Artillery Group. It inactivated on 24 June 1961 at Fort Wadsworth, New York.
The 62nd Antiaircraft Artillery Gun Battalion inactivated on 13 March at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey. Redesignated 9 December 1948 as the 62nd Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons battalion, it activated on 15 January 1949 at Fort Bliss, Texas, and assigned on 4 November 1948 to the 2nd Armored Division.
It was relieved on 20 October 1950 from its assignment to the 2nd Armored Division. Redesignated 1 October 1953 as the 62nd Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion, it inactivated on 15 September 1958 in Germany.
The 893rd Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion inactivated on 14 December 1945 in Germany. Redesignated 13 October 1948 as the 50th Antiaircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion, it activated on 8 June 1949 at Fort Bliss, TX. It was redesignated on 20 March 1953 as the 50th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion before being inactivated on 25 June 1958 in Korea.
The 331st Antiaircraft Artillery Searchlight Battalion was disbanded on 4 December 1944 in Italy, but was reconstituted on 5 August 1958 in the Regular Army.
Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 8th Artillery Group; 62nd and 50th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalions; and 331st Antiaircraft Artillery Searchlight Battalion were consolidated, reorganized and redesignated on 24 June 1961 as the 62nd Artillery, a parent regiment under the Combined Army Regimental System. It was redesignated on 1 September 1971 as the 62nd Air Defense Artillery. It was withdrawn on 16 August 1986 from the Combat Arms Regimental System and reorganized under the United States Army Regimental System with Headquarters at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.
