3rd Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment
The 3rd Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment was first constituted on 11 January 1812 in the Regular Army as a company of the 14th Infantry and was organized in 1812. During the War of 1812, the unit participated in 3 campaigns as part of the 14th Infantry: Canada, Bladensburg, and McHenry.
After the War of 1812, the unit was consolidated between May and October 1815 with a company each of the 18th and 20th Infantry (both first constituted on 11 January 1812) and a company each of the 36th and 38th Infantry (both first constituted on 29 January 1813) to form a company of the 4th Infantry. This Company was designated on 21 August 1816 as Company C, 4th Infantry. Company C, 4th Infantry participated in 10 campaigns of the Mexican-American War: Palo Alto, Resaca de la Palma, Monterey, Vera Cruz, Cerro Gordo, Churubusco, Molino del Rey, Chapultepec, Puebla 1847, and Tlaxcala 1847. The unit had also been active in the Wars with the Native Americans since the Tippacanoe campaign in 1811. The unit participated in 6 campaigns prior to 1860: Seminoles, Black Hawk, Oregon 1855, Oregon 1856, Washington 1855, and Washington 1856.
Company C was consolidated on 31 March 1869 with Company C, 30th Infantry. Company C, 30th Infantry had been first constituted on 3 May 1861 in the Regular Army as Company C, 3rd Battalion, 12th Infantry and organized on 23 December 1865 at Fort Hamilton, New York. Company C, 3rd Battalion, 12th Infantry was reorganized and redesignated on 7 December 1866 as Company C, 30th Infantry, before being consolidated with Company C, 4th Infantry. The consolidated unit was designated as Company C, 4th Infantry. The unit colors gained the campaign streamers of the absorbed unit, which had participated in 12 campaigns during the American Civil War: Peninsula, Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Appomattox, and Virginia 1863.
The unit continued to be active in the wars against the Native Americans, participating in the Little Big Horn and Utes campaigns in the 1870s and 1880s. The unit also fought in the War with Spain and the subsequent suppression of the insurrection in the Philippines, recieving a campaign streamer for the Santiago in the former conflict and streamers for Manila, Malolos, Cavite, and Luzon 1899 in the latter.
The 4th Infantry Regiment as a whole was assigned on 1 October 1917 to the 3rd Division. As part of the 4th Infantry Regiment, Company C participated in 6 campaigns during the First World War: Aisne, Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, and Champagne 1918.
The 4th Infantry Regiment as a whole was relieved on 15 May 1940 from assignment to the 3rd Division. It was assigned on 1 November 1945 to the 25th Infantry Division. After serving as part of the American occupation of Japan, the unit was inactivated there on 31 January 1947. The 4th Infantry Regiment as a whole was relieved on 1 February 1947 from assignment to the 25th Infantry Division.
Company C, 4th Infantry was reactivated on 1 October 1948 at Fort Lewis, Washington. The 4th Infantry Regiment as a whole was assigned on 10 October 1954 to the 71st Infantry Division. It was relieved from this assignment on 15 September 1956. Company C, 4th Infantry was inactivated on 15 February 1958 at Fort Devens, Massachusetts.
Company C, 4th Infantry was redesignated on 11 May 1959 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battle Group, 4th Infantry, withdrawn from the Regular Army, allotted to the Army Reserve, and assigned to the 102nd Infantry Division. Its organic elements were concurrently constituted. The Battle Group was activated on 1 June 1959 with Headquarters at Fairfield, Illinois.
Concurrently with its activation, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battle Group, 4th Infantry was consolidated with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 405th Infantry. Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 405th Infantry was first constituted on 23 July 1918 in the National Army as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 405th Infantry, an element of the 102d Division. That unit was demobilized on 30 November 1918. It was reconstituted on 24 June 1921 in the Organized Reserves as an element of the 102nd Division (later redesignated as the 102nd Infantry Division) and organized in November on 1921 at Little Rock, Arkansas. It was ordered into active military service on 15 September 1942 and reorganized at Camp Maxey, Texas. After the end of the Second World War, during which it had participated in 3 camapigns (Aleutian Islands, Rhineland, and Central Europe), it was inactivated on 1 June 1946 in Germany.
Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 405th Infantry was reactivated on 12 November 1946 at Mankato, Minnesota and inactivated there on 3 January 1947. It was activated on 25 April 1947 at St. Louis, Missouri and inactivated there on 12 March 1948. The Organized Reserves were redesignated on 25 March 1948 as the Organized Reserve Corps, into which the unit was reactivated on 18 December 1950 at Flora, Illinois. The location of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 405th Infantry changed on 15 March 1951 to Fairfield, Illinois. The Organized Reserve Corps was redesignated on 9 July 1952 as the Army Reserve, to which the unit remained assigned, before being consolidated with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battle Group, 4th Infantry. The consolidated unit was designated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battle Group, 4th Infantry.
The Battle Group was reorganized and redesignated on 1 April 1963 as the 3rd Battalion, 4th Infantry. It was inactivated on 31 December 1965 at Fairfield, Illinois, and relieved from assignment to the 102nd Infantry Division.
While inactive, the unit was withdrawn on 30 June 1989 from the Army Reserve and allotted to the Regular Army. Still inactive, the unit was redesignated on 1 October 2005 as the 3d Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment. The 3rd Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment was assigned on 16 October 2009 to the 170th Infantry Brigade and activated in Germany.
