3rd Battalion, 17th Field Artillery Regiment

The 3rd Battalion, 17th Field Artillery Regiment was first constituted on 1 July 1916 in the Regular Army as Battery C, 17th Field Artillery and organized on 6 June 1917 at Camp Robinson, Wisconsin. The 17th Field Artillery Regiment as a whole was assigned on 21 September 1917 to the 2nd Division. The unit participated in 6 campaigns of the First World War with the 2nd Division: Aisne, Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, Lorraine 1918, and Ile de France 1918.

The 17th Field Artillery Regiment as a whole was relieved on 18 December 1920 from assignment to the 2nd Division. The Regiment was assigned on 22 July 1929 to the 1st Division and relieved on 1 January 1930 from that assignment and assigned to the 2nd Division. It was relieved on 16 October 1939 from assignment to the 2nd Division.

The unit was reorganized and redesignated on 1 March 1944 as Battery C, 17th Field Artillery Battalion. During the Second World War, the unit participated in 8 campaigns: Tunisia, Sicily (streamer with arrowhead indicating participation in the initial assault), Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. After the War, the unit was inactivated on 16 April 1946 at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey

The unit was reactivated on 1 August 1946 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. It was redesignated on 24 January 1948 as Battery B, 17th Field Artillery Battalion. During the Korean War, the unit participated in 10 campaigns: UN Defensive, UN Offensive, CCF Intervention, First UN Counteroffensive, CCF Spring Offensive, UN Summer-Fall Offensive, Second Korean Winter, Korea Summer-Fall 1952, Third Korean Winter, and Korea Summer 1953.

The unit was reorganized and redesignated on 1 June 1958 as Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 3rd Howitzer Battalion, 17th Artillery with its organic elements constituted on 1 June 1958 and activated on 25 June 1958. It was redesignated on 24 March 1964 as the 3rd Battalion, 17th Artillery and on 1 September 1971 as the 3rd Battalion, 17th Field Artillery. The unit was inactivated on 31 March 1983 in Germany. The unit was reactivated on 16 July 1988 in Germany and inactivated on 15 May 1995 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

The unit was redesignated on 1 October 2005 as the 3rd Battalion, 17th Field Artillery Regiment. It was reactivated on 17 April 2007 at Fort Lewis, Washington and assigned to the 5th Brigade Combat Team, 2d Infantry Division. In July 2010, the 5th Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division was inactivated and reflagged as the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. The Battalion was relieved from assignment to the 5th Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division and reassigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division.
