28th Transportation Battalion
In August 2009, the 28th Transportation Battalion began its process toward inactivation as part of the restructuring of US forces in Europe and the overall transformation of the US Army. This inactivation was planned for 2010.
Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 28th Transportation Battalion was first constituted on 10 February 1936 in the Regular Army as the 1st Battalion, 28th Quartermaster Regiment. It was activated on 10 February 1941 at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. The unit was redesignated on 1 April 1942 as the 1st Battalion, 28th Quartermaster Truck Regiment. The Battalion was broken up 5 December 1943 and its elements were reorganized and redesignated as follows: Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 28th Quartermaster Battalion, Mobile; and Companies A, B, C, and D as the 3421st, 3422d, 3423d, and 3424th Quartermaster Truck Companies, respectively, which thereafter had separate lineages. The Battalion participated in 6 campaigns during the Second World War: Algeria-French Morocco, Tunisia, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France, and Rhineland. After the Second World War, Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 28th Quartermaster Battalion, Mobile was inactivated on 12 November 1945 in France.
While inactive, the Battalion was converted and redesignated on 1 August 1946 as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 28th Transportation Corps Truck Battalion. It was redesignated on 23 December 1948 as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 28th Transportation Truck Battalion. The unit was finally activated on 20 January 1949 in Germany.
The Battalion was reorganized and redesignated on 2 December 1949 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 28th Transportation Truck Battalion. It was reorganized and redesignated on 1 April 1953 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 28th Transportation Battalion. It was again redesignated on 19 June 1959 as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 28th Transportation Battalion.
In the first 5 days of Kosovo humanitarian relief operations in April 1999, the 37th Transportation Command, made up of the 6966th Transportation Truck Terminal and the 28th Transportation Battalion, accumulated more than 13,000 miles to support the refugees.
