28th Finance Battalion
The 28th Finance Battalion is located in central Pennsylvania in Lebanon, PA and consists of a headquarters and four detachments. it is the only Finance National Guard unit in the state of Pennsylvania. There are positions open in military payroll and accounting fields.
During Annual Training, the unit trains at active duty sites, working on real military pay accounts. Places the Finance unit has been during Annual Training: In the United States: On the Chesapeake at Aberdeen Proving Grounds MD; overlooking the Hudson River at West Point, NY; near Florida at Ft Stewart, GA; near the North Carolina shores at Ft Bragg, NC; outside Virginia Beach at Ft Eustis, VA, and in the snow country of New York at Ft Drum, NY among others.
And the unit doesn't just stay in the United States Overseas training has been in Italy, Egypt, Panama, Korea and Kuwait. Since the unit trains in a very useful civilian as well as military skills, there are opportunities for fulltime short tours at both Ft Indiantown Gap and other locations such as the National Guard Bureau in northern Virginia.
The 28th Finance Battalion was originally organized on 4 November 1953 as Company C, 165th Military Police Battalion at Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Subsequently on 15 October 1961 activated for Federal Service, and on 11 August 1962 released from active duty. On 1 April 1963 the unit was reorganized and redesigned as the 28th Military Police Company, and on 1 November 1965 the unit was converted and redesigned as the 28th Administrative Company. On 1 December 1971 the unit reorganized and redesigned as the 28th Finance Company, assigned to the 28th Division's DISCOM.
On 1 January 1989 the unit was reorganized as the 28th Finance (Support) Unit, and assigned to the 213th Area Support Group. On 16 March 1991 activated for Federal Service for Operation Desert Storm. In 1991 the entire unit was mobilized for Operation Desert Storm. The unit supported the massive demobilization effort to return all of the reserve component soldiers mobilized for Operation Desert Shield / Storm to civilian life. The unit sent teams to the following installations to support the demobilization effort: Ft Meade; MD, Ft Lee, VA; Ft Eustis, VA; Ft Stewart, GA; Ft Carson, CO; Ft Devens, MA; Ft Dix, NJ; Ft Indiantown Gap, PA and Ft McCoy, WI. Officially the unit itself demobilized in July 1991 after four months of duty. However 35% of the unit remained on active duty, some up to a year to continue to support the drawdown from Operation Desert Storm.
On 1 September 1993, the unit was reorganized into the 28th Finance Battalion, with four separate detachments assigned: the 528th Finance Detachment, the 628th Finance Detachment, the 828th Finance Detachment, the 928th Finance Detachment, as well as a Headquarters.
In 1997 the 828th Finance Detachment (Det 1) was mobilized in support of Operation Joint Guard. Unit members were deployed throughout Europe in support of finance operations.
The 28th Finance (Support) Unit and Det 1, 828th Finance Detachment were awarded the Governor's Unit Citation for their participation in Desert Storm and Operation Joint Guard.
The distinguished unit insignia is symbolic as follows. Silver gray / argent and golden yellow are the colors traditionally associated with the Finance Corps. Gold is emblematic of honor; red symbolizes valor and sacrifice. The lozenge is adapted from the Finance Corps branch insignia while the laurel represents high achievement and excellence highlighting the unit's motto: FINANCE EXCELLENCE. The keystone refers to the organizations location in Pennsylvania and symbolizes strength.
