249th Support Battalion (Main)
A flash flood, spawned by Tropical Storm Charley, in the early morning hours of 24 August 1999, destroyed more than 600 homes and businesses and left more than 2,000 people in shelters in Del Rio, Texas. In the early morning hours of Aug. 24, local officials called the governor's office, pleading for assistance. The Texas Army National Guard was quick to respond. With advance warning of what to expect in Del Rio, Guard soldiers filled 13 600-gallon "water buffalo" trailers and two 5,000-gallon tankers with potable water en-route to the disaster area. Company A, 249th Main Support Battalion, took an 18-hour shift distributing water from a 5,000 gallon tanker in a local supermarket parking lot.
In response to President Bush's appeal for upgraded airport security, more than 400 Texas Guard members from the 49th Armored Division provided assistance at 26 airports across the state, including soldiers from Company B, 249th Support Battalion.
