2nd Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment

The 2nd Battalion, 26th Infantry was first organized on 28 December 1900 in the Regular Army at the Presidio of San Francisco, California, as Company B, 1st Provisional Battalion of Infantry. The unit was consolidated on 7 February 1901 with Company B, 26th Infantry (which had been first constituted on 2 February 1901 in the Regular Army), and consolidated unit designated as Company B, 26th Infantry.
The 26th Infantry was assigned on 8 June 1917 to the 1st Expeditionary Division (later redesignated as the 1st Division, and again as the 1st Infantry Division).
The unit was inactivated on 15 February 1957 at Fort Riley, Kansas, and relieved from assignment to the 1st Infantry Division. It was concurrently redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battle Group, 26th Infantry. It was assigned on 1 February 1963 to the 1st Infantry Division and activated at Fort Riley, Kansas with its organic elements concurrently constituted and activated. The unit was inactivated on 13 January 1964 at Fort Riley, Kansas, and relieved from assignment to the 1st Infantry Division.
The unit was again redesignated on 3 April 1987 as the 2nd Battalion, 26th Infantry. Its Headquarters was concurrently transferred to the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command and the unit was activated at Fort Dix, New Jersey. The unit was inactivated on 18 July 1990 at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Its Headquarters was concurrently withdrawn from the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command.
The Battalion was redesignated 1 October 2005 as the 2nd Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment. It was assigned on 16 April 2007 to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, and activated at Fort Hood, Texas. 2nd Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment served less than a year with the reorganized 3rd Brigade Combat Team, before the reorganization of the 1st Infantry Division's 2nd Brigade. With this reorganization in March 2008, the 2nd Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment was inactivated, its personnel reflagged as the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment.
