2-224th Aviation Battalion (Assault)

The 2-224th Aviation Battalion is an Air Assault Battalion stationed at Richmond International Airport in Sandston, VA approximately ten miles east of downtown Richmond, VA. The HHC is a standard Headquarters & Headquarters Company, containing the Battalion Staff, Flight Operations section, Commo section, Mess section and an attached POL section. A Company is an Air Assault Company with 15 UH-1 helicopters and crews. B Company is an Air Assault Company with 18 UH-60L helicopters and crews; it fielded the UH-60L in 1999. C Company is a unit stationed in Maryland. D Company is the Maintenance Support unit.

Task Force Pegasus conducts air movement, reconnaissance, and security operations in the SFOR Area of Operations in order to maintain a safe and secure environment and create conditions for a lasting consolidation of peace without further need of NATO-led forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Deployed to Bosnia in late 2001, the U.S. Army's Task Force Pegasus (TFP) used the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter for air movements and the OH-58D Kiowa Warriors helicopter for reconnaissance. The unit's combination of sub-units is unique. It is on the leading edge of army aviation, becoming a multi-functional aviation battalion, by having UH-60's and 58D's working together. This was the first time that this had ever been done under one battalion headquarters. This was also the first time that a (U.S. Army) National Guard battalion had commanded active duty companies. The mix was extremely diverse with units coming from areas such as Virginia (UH-60's), Louisiana (58D's), and Texas (Air Traffic Services). All the units came together under the symbol of Pegasus. Although the unit was composed of a wide range of personnel from many different backgrounds, all the aircrew displayed a universal desire to fly, in spite of the Bosnian weather. They flew training missions over the mountains around Tuzla. Such missions ensured that the crews are ready for operations.

• Foxtrot Company, 1st Battalion, 58th Aviation Regiment, Ft Hood, Tx.
