16th Sustainment Brigade
16th Corps Support Group
The mission of the 16th Sustainment Brigade is to provide sustainment support to forces in the US European Command (EUCOM) area of resopnsibility and, on order, the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) area of responsibility. It would then, on order deploy to execute theater opening and Reception, Staging, Onward movement, and Integration of forces, provide expeditionary sustainment support to full spectrum operations, and on order redeploy. Prior to its reorganization and redesignation in 2007, the 16th Corps Support Group had a mission of task organizing, deploying and providing tailored combat service support to V Corps units in divisional or corps areas across the spectrum of operations.
The 16th Sustainment Brigade was first constituted on 29 October 1965 in the Regular Army as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 16th General Support Group. The unit was activated on 10 December 1965 in the Dominican Republic. The Group was inactivated on 19 September 1968 at Fort Benning, Georgia.
The unit was redesignated on 16 September 1987 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 16th Support Group and activated in Germany. The 16th Corps Support Group participated in operations in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm between 1990 and 1991. It also participated in rotations in Kosovo in support of the NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR).
On 1 May 2002, the 16th Corps Support Group was realigned to include the 181st Transportation Battalion located at Turley Barracks in Manheim, Germany, and the 485th Corps Support Battalion, located on Hutier Kaserne, to increase their combat service support capabilities.
In March of 2003, the 16th Corps Support Group and its battalions deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, where they provided logistical support to include direct support maintenance, transportation and supply support to all units in the theater. Commanding and controlling over 3,000 logistical Soldiers, Team 16 armed, fueled, fixed, moved and sustained Combined Joint Task Force 7 (CJTF-7) forces for a year during combat and stability operations during Operation Iraqi Freedom. In addition to Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The unit was reorganized and redesignated on 16 July 2007 as the 16th Sustainment Brigade. At that time, the Brigade was composed of the 16th Sustainment Brigade Special Troops Battalion, the 391st Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, and the 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, detached from the rest of the Brigade and stationed at Grafenwoehr.
In July 2008, the Brigade deployed to Iraq and provided sustainment, combat support, and force protection operations in supports of Multi-National Division - North through expert life support and logistical operations. By 2009, the 39th Transportation Battalion (Movement Control) had also become part of the 16th Sustainment Brigade.
As part of continuing restructuring of US forces in Europe, it was announced on 1 March 2013 that Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 391st Combat Service Support Battalion would be inactivated during 2013.
