164th Engineer Battalion (Mech)

The mission of the 164th Engineer Battalion (Mech) is to increase the combat effectiveness of the Corps by accomplishing mobility, countermobility, survivability and sustainment tasks. To perform combat missions in the role of infantry when required. To reinforce heavy brigade and armored Cavalry regiment engineer units when required. The unit was organized on 3 April 1923 in Kenmare, ND, as Headquarters Company, 3rd Bn, 164th Infantry, and element of the 34th Infantry Division, and was disbanded on 24 January 1929 at Kenmare. It was reorganized and redesignated on 1 May 1940 as Headquarters Detachment, 3rd Bn, 164th Infantry.

On 21 October 1940 the unit was converted and redesignated as Headquarters Battery, 1st Bn, 188th Field Artillery and inducted into active federal service on 1 April 1941 at Minot. Headquarters Battery was released from active duty on 27 October 1945 at Camp Miles, Standish, MA.

On 12 February 1948 the unit was reorganized and federally recognized as Co B 231st Engineer Battalion and was again called to active federal service in support of the Korean conflict. The unit was released from active federal service on 10 October 1954 and reverted to state control.

Redesignated as Headquarters Headquarters Service Company, 164th Engineer Battalion at Minot on 15 April 1955, and was again called to active duty on 15 October 1961. The company was released from federal service on 9 August 1962 and reverted to state control.

Headquarters and Headquarters Company 164th Engineer Combat Battalion underwent the Engineer Restructuring Initiative on 1 September 1993, and was converted to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 164th Engineer Battalion (Corps) (Mech).

A significant change took place in May 1996, which allowed females to hold positions within the unit for the first time since the unit was organized.
