149th Personnel Service Battalion
A total of of 245 members of the 149th Personnel Services Battalion returned home September 20, 2000 following a seven-month tour as part of the peacekeeping force in Bosnia. On April 15, 1999, eleven Texas Army National Guard units were officially notified this week that they should begin training for a possible mobilization and deployment to Bosnia as part of the NATO Stabilization Force. The units are: Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Aviation Brigade, 49th Armored Division, Austin, Texas; 249th Signal Battalion, Dallas, Texas; HHC, 111th Engineer Battalion, Abilene, Texas; Company A, 111th Eng. Bn., Abilene, Texas; Company C, 111th Eng. Bn., Irving, Texas; 649th Military Intelligence Battalion, Austin, Texas; 149th Military Police Company, San Antonio, Texas; 1149th CID Detachment, Austin, Texas; 149th Personnel Services Battalion, Austin, Texas; 1104th Movement Control Team, Austin, Texas; Company H, 149th Aviation (Air Traffic Support), Austin, Texas.
The insignia was approved on 16 September 1997, consisting of a shield blazoned: Per bend bevilled Azure (Dark Blue) and Gules a mace and a quill saltirewise Argent. Attached below the shield is a blue scroll inscribed "SUPPORTING THE SOLDIER" in silver. Dark blue and scarlet are the colors traditionally used by Personnel Services. The mace denotes authority and refers to the State of Texas, its head being modeled after the San Jacinto Memorial star. The quill refers to the unit's mission to serve U.S. Army personnel and indicates administrative excellence. Speedy response to the needs of personnel is emphasized by the lightning flash configuration of the division of the field. Silver (white) denotes integrity. Blue, white and scarlet together represent the United States. White also indicates integrity.
