127th Aviation Support Battalion
Workhorse

The 127th Aviation Support Battalion provides Combat Service Support (CSS) to include Direct Support (DS) supply of Class ll, lll, lV, lX and Direct Supports Maintenance (Ground) and Aviation Intermediate Maintenance (AVIM) to the 4th Aviation Brigade and the 1 / 1 Cavalry Squadron.

The 127th Aviation Support Battalion obtained its roots from as far back as 1985 as D Company, 503rd Aviation Regiment, 3rd Armored Division. The unit redesignated as 58th AMC between 1985 and 1987. On 16 July 1987, the unit redesignated again as I Company, 227th Aviation Regiment.

On 15 January 1990, the unit completely reorganized as the Division Aviation Support Battalion (Provisional), 3rd Armored Division. Personnel for the battalion were drawn from elements of I Company, 227th Aviation Regiment, 122nd Main Support Battalion, HHC Division Support Command 3AD, and Golf and Hotel Companies of the Combat Aviation Brigade. Within less than six months, the battalion was providing "One Stop Shopping" for the 3rd Armored Division Combat Aviation Brigade in all areas of maintenance (ground and air) and supply. On 9 August 1990, the battalion was redesignated as 9th Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, 3rd Armored Division.

The unit "locked in" with one of its customers, the 3/227th Attack Helicopter Battalion in September 1990 for their preparation for deployment to South West Asia (SWA) under Operation Desert Shield. On 8 November 1990, the battalion was officially informed that it would deploy to SWA. The battalion deployed and operated throughout its preparation phase for war at less than 70% strength in personnel and equipment. The battalion received a plus up of equipment and personnel just prior to the war. The battalion soldiers served with distinction throughout the preparation for, duration of, and buildup after the war. The battalion remained in Kuwait an additional two months after the war to help defend the line until UN Peace Keeping Forces finally arrived. The battalion assisted the Brigade in its redeployment from SWA, while redeploying itself. The battalion is decorated with the Liberation of Kuwait Battle Streamer and the Defense of Saudi Arabian Battle Streamer. The battalion redeployed from SWA to Germany during the period of May through June 1991.

The battalion was realigned under the 8th Infantry Division Support Command on 15 June 1991 while 3rd Armored Division Support Command conducted the draw down of the 3rd Armored Division. On 4 September 1991, the battalion was again realigned under the 1st Armored Division with the 4th Brigade. The battalion was redesignated as the 127th Aviation Support Battalion on 16 September 1992.

On 15 October, 1995 the battalion was alerted for deployment to Bosnia and Herzegovina in support of Operation Joint Endeavor. The first elements of the battalion arrived in Kaposvar, Hungary on 15 December, 1995. The battalion began split operations in six different locations throughout Hungary, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina on 15 January, 1996. The battalion redeployed to central region on 8 November, 1996.
