1st Battalion, 84th Field Artillery Regiment

The 1st Battalion, 84th Field Artillery Regiment was first constituted on 16 September 1918 in the National Army as Battery A, 84th Field Artillery. The 84th Field Artillery Regiment as a whole was demobilized on 13 December 1918 at Camp Sheridan, Alabama.
The unit was reconstituted on 17 March 1930 in the Regular Army as Battery A, 84th Field Artillery, an element of the 3rd Cavalry Division. It was activated on 1 July 1936 at Fort Riley, Kansas. The Battery was inactivated on 30 September 1939 at Fort Riley, Kansas, and relieved from assignment to the 3rd Cavalry Division.
The unit was redesignated on 1 October 1940 as Battery A, 84th Field Artillery Battalion, and activated at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, as an element of the 9th Division (later redesignated as the 9th Infantry Division). With the 9th Infantry Division, the Battery participated in 8 campaigns during the Second World War: Algeria-French Morocco (streamer with arrowhead indicating participation in the initial assault), Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. After the end of the Second World War and time spent as part of Allied occupation forces in Europe, the Battery was inactivated on 20 November 1946 in Germany.
Battery A, 84th Field Artillery Battalion was reactivated on 12 July 1948 at Fort Dix, New Jersey. It was inactivated on 1 December 1957 at Fort Carson, Colorado, and relieved from assignment to the 9th Infantry Division. It was redesignated on 2 June 1958 as Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Missile Battalion, 84th Artillery, with its organic elements concurrently constituted. The Battalion was activated on 25 June 1958 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and inactivated there on 19 April 1962 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
The Battalion was redesignated on 1 February 1966 as the 1st Battalion, 84th Artillery, assigned to the 9th Infantry Division, and activated at Fort Riley, Kansas. Deploying to Vietnam with the 9th Infantry Division, the Battalion participated in 8 campaigns of the conflic there: Counteroffensive Phase II, Counteroffensive Phase III, Tet Counteroffensive, Counteroffensive Phase IV, Counteroffensive Phase V, Counteroffensive Phase VI, Tet 69/Counteroffensive, and Summer-Fall 1969. After returning from Vietnam, the Battalion was inactivated on 25 September 1969 in Hawaii.
While inactive, the Battalion was redesignated on 1 September 1971 as the 1st Battalion, 84th Field Artillery. It was activated on 21 October 1972 at Fort Lewis, Washington. The Battalion was inactivated on 15 January 1991 at Fort Lewis, Washington, and relieved from assignment to the 9th Infantry Division.
While inactivate, the Battalion was again redesignated on 1 October 2005 as the 1st Battalion, 84th Field Artillery Regiment. The Battalion was assigned on 16 October 2009 to the 170th Infantry Brigade and activated in Germany. The Battalion was organized as a 5 battery legacy M109A6 Paladin battalion.
