1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment
"Battle Boars"
The 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry was originally constituted on 2 February 1901 in the Regular Army as Company A, 30th Infantry. It was organized on 16 March 1901 at the Presidio of San Francisco, California.
Thereafter, the 30th Infantry was assigned on 21 November 1917 to the 3rd Division. It was relieved on 12 January 1940 from assignment to the 3rd Division, and again reassigned on 15 May 1940 to the 3rd Division. The 3rd Infantry Division was later redesignated the 3rd Infantry Division. The unit was again relieved on 6 April 1951 from assignment to the 3rd Infantry Division and again reassigned on 2 December 1954 to the 3rd Infantry Division.
The unit was reorganized and redesignated on 1 July 1957 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battle Group, 30th Infantry, and remained assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division, while its organic elements were at the same time constituted and activated. The unit was reorganized and redesignated on 10 July 1963 as the 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry. It was inactivated on 16 June 1989 in Germany and was relieved from assignment to the 3rd Infantry Division.
The Battalion was reassigned on 16 August 1992 to the 3rd Infantry Division and activated in Germany. It was inactivated there on 15 January 1994.
It was reactivated on 16 February 1996 at Fort Benning, Georgia. The Battalion subsequently deployed in support of full spectrum combat operations supporting the 3rd Infantry Division, including a deployment with the 3rd Brigade, 3rd infantry Division, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom III.
Following the deployment to OIF III, the 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division began transformation to the US Army's new modular force structure, which had started with 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry in July 2004. As a result, 1-30th Infantry was inactivated and its personnel reflagged as 3rd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, part of the reorganized and redesignated 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized).
The 1-30th Infantry was reactivated on 6 September 2006, at Fort Stewart in a reflagging ceremony. The 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, an element of the 2nd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized), also in the process of transforming to the US Army's modular force structure, was reflagged as 1-30th Infantry.
The 1-30th Infantry deployed in mid-2007 for another tour of duty in Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The unit remained in that country into 2008.
