1-27th Field Artillery
"Gridsmashers"
The 1/27th Field Artillery Battalion is the only subordinate unit in the 41st Field Artillery Brigade. Though the 1/27th "Gridsmashers" stand-alone in their field, they manage to carry a heavy load on their shoulders. The 1/27th is the single asset the corps commander has to support the 11th Aviation Regiment when they do their deep attacks. Their primary mission is to shoot SEAD (suppression of enemy air defense) fires, a very big, important mission for the corps.
The unit deployed in March 2003 to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Following the cessation of major ground combat operations ended, a portion of the unit was assigned to the Joint Visitors Bureau at Camp Victory, Baghdad. There, it was tasked with the security and the logistical support of all visiting dignitaries. The unit redeployed in March or April 2004 to Babenhausen, Germany.
