Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

Chapelcross

BNFL owns and operates two Magnox nuclear power stations, Calder Hall, located at Sellafield in West Cumbria and Chapelcross in Southern Scotland. The first of the four Chapelcross reactors, located at Annan, near Dumfries on Solway Firth in south-west Scotland, came on stream in February 1959 and by the time of the official opening on the 2 May 1959 all four reactors were operational. These carbon-dioxide cooled reactors, identical to the Calder Hall reactors, were formerly used to produce plutonium for nuclear weapons, and are currently used to produce tritium.
