No. 230 OCU
Before working with the Vulcan 230 Operational Conversion Unit had the responsibility to train (convert) pilots to fly piston engined aircraft like the Lincoln & Lancaster. Lincoln conversion elements at Waddington and Upwood merged to form 230 OCU on 01 August 1953 at RAF at Upwood. The squadron renamed Lincoln CF on the 1st February 1955. Vulcan XA897 was officially given to 230 OCU in 1956, but it was destroyed returning from New Zealand. This set back prevented the OCU from acquring a Vulcan until 1957. Training with the B2 began in 1960, with the first B2 variant to be delivered to the RAF on 01 July 1960, going to No.230 OCU based at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire. During its life the 230 OCU was stationed at Waddington, Finningley and Scampton. The unit ceased activities in August 1981 [and should not be confused with Number 230 Squadron, which was variously equipped with flying boats, light aircraft and helicopters].
