Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

No. 148 Squadron

In 1956, RAF Marham and RAF Honington were prepared for V-Force operations and five more Valiant squadrons were formed - 214, 207, 148, 49 and 7 Squadrons.

During the Suez Crisis Valiants of 138, 148, 207 and 214 squadrons were deployed to RAF Luqa in Malta and the first Valiant attacks against Egyptian airfields began on 31 October 1956. After failing to stop Egyptian and Israeli fighting around the Suez Canal, RAF Canberra and Valiant bombers flying from Malta and Cyprus, in conjunction with French Air Force aircraft, attacked twelve airfields in the Canal Zone. Airfield attacks continued until 4 November, by which time the Egyptian Air Force had been decimated.

In 1964 the entire Valiant fleet was retired.

RAF Stradishall opened in February 1938 as part of 3 Group. It was first occupied by 9 Squadron with Heyfords and 148 Squadron with Wellesleys, although the latter were soon replaced by Heyfords and Ansons. In September 1938 the Munich crisis had Stradishall on full alert and its tentative target, in case of war, was Berlin. While based at RAF Upwood [from November 1946 to July 1955] the Squadron flew the Avro Lancaster B.I. (November 1946 - February 1950) and Avro Lincoln (January 1950 - June 1955).
