Shemyakin and Ovchinnikov Institute Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry
The genesis of the Shemyakin and Ovchinnikov Institute lies in the desire of the Soviet Ministry of Defense to fund research into vaccines and biological toxins.
The Insitute's Biotechnology Pilot Plant covers a surface area of about 4,000m² and houses test laboratories as well fermentation and gene-engineering pilot units for the cultivation of microorganisms. The facility is equipped with not only devices used in the initial synthesis of proteins, metabolites, but also with the fermentation units needed for the cultivation of viruses and phages.
As a result of the promulgation of a Decree of the Academy's Presidium in July 1979, a branch of Shemyakin & Ovchinnikov Institute was established at the Pushchino Scientific Center of Biological Research.
As of 1999, the Pushchino Branch of the Institute was located 100 km to the south of Moscow and was staffed by 315 persons. Its "Biocenter" Scientific Production Complex (SPC) included three barrier buildings. These are the main animal house and the mini animal house; both of which are used for the breeding and maintenance of laboratory animals (inbred and outbred strains of mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, minipigs) of reliable and defined genetic and hygienic quality (SPF-Specific Pathogen Free, VAF-Virus Antibody Free). The third and final barrier building is the laboratory building which is used for nonclinical biomedical investigations with a barrier area for the maintenance of laboratory animals under long-term experiments.
