Omutninsk
The manufacturing of anthrax was organized at factories in Omutninsk inf the Vyatka Region and Sverdlovsk, and the production of combat strains of tularemia (a bacteria which causes a kind of pneumonia) was organized in Omutninsk, among other locations. It was discovered in the 1980s in Omutninsk that rodents living in forests around the biological weapons factory were infected with a military strain of tularemia. Rodents were not natural bearers of tularemia, but they became such and began to spread the disease throughout the region.
