Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

Chapayevsk
Sredne-Volzhskiy Chemical Plant

Russia's first and most archaic chemical weapon plant operated in Chapayevsk during the Great Patriotic War, though it ceased production at the end of the war. This so-called the "city of military chemistry" in Samara Oblast produced ammunition containing chemical agents for many years.

In 1989, the first Russian facility for destruction of chemical weapons was built at Chapayevsk. However, it has never been used for this purpose, since demands from local residents concerned about the hazards of planned transport of chemical agents to the facility caused it to be converted into an educational training center.

The plant was modified and turned into a training center for the destruction of chemical weapons, and cadets from the Saratov School and Chemical Defense Academy are sent to Chapayevsk to study organization of the chemical weapons destruction process.
