Bushehr - Overview

The Bushehr Nuclear Power Facility is located 17 kilometers south of the city of Bushehr, between the fishing villages of Halileh, and Bandargeh on the Persian Gulf. Construction began in the 1970s, and activity at the construction site resumeed in the 1990s. Although there had been little overall change noticeable in available imagery, a detailed examination disclosed substantial progress towards completion of the external structure of the first reactor unit.

The site appears to consist of four separate areas: two power-generating reactors, an industrial area northeast of the reactors, a major residential area to the north, and a second major residential area to the northeast.

Other areas include the concrete channel for cooling water that runs from the reactor area to the Gulf, a harbor also south of the reactor site providing logistic support. There appeared to be a small naval presence at the harbor.

The two fishing villages of Heleyleh and Bandargah were remarkably unchanged since construction began in the late 1970's.
