Adequate resources of uranium have been identified by the Uranium Corporation of India Ltd. to meet the requirements of India's currently envisaged nuclear power program. There are four promising uranium mining areas in India: the Singhbhum district (Bihar), West Khasi hills (Meghalaya), the Bhima Basin area (Gulbarga district of Karnataka), and the Yellapur- Peddagattu area of Nalgonda district (Andhra Pradesh).

In 1997 the Atomic Minerals Division (AMD) of the Department of Atomic Energy discovered high quality uranium in the Bhima basin near Hogi village in Gulbarga district of Karnataka. The Bhima basin has an exposed extent of 5,200 sq km, and is spread over a stretch of 160 kms in northeast-southwest direction in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Test boreholes disclosed iven three ore zones, two of them having grades better than the Jaduguda uranium deposits in Bihar.
