Bhanur [Bhanoor]
Bharat Dynamics Limited is a premier organization under the Ministry of Defence, and the sole agency for manufacturing various types of integrated guided missiles. It has two units, both located in Andhra Pradesh. One is at Kanchanbagh, south of Hyderabad, and the other is located at Bhanur [Bhanoor] in Medak District, north of Hyderabad.
The BDL Material Testing Laboratory at Bhanur includes various testing equipment. Technical personnel are responsible for failure analysis of Missile and Launcher components, sub-assemblies and sub-systems. The Concurrent Engineering Groupa (CEG) is responsible for import-substitution of materials and components for missile technology. The Laboratory is also engaged in implementation of Computer Integrated Management concepts, including development of quality control management application in RDBMS (ORACLE), as well as implementation of ISO 9000 procedures.
The Heat Treatment Division is involved in the installation and commissioning of Heat Treatment equipment. Activities include operation and preventive maintenance of FOURS-BMI, High-Temperature Vacuum heat treatment furnace. Technical personnelare engaged in production and quality control of all missile and launcher components. The Electro Plating Division is devoted to various plating processes and ETP processes, with applications to over 850 types of missile and launcher components.
In 1990 Bharat Dynamics Limited assigned a Konkurus Project in Medak, Hyderbad, Andhra Pradesh for a township of 1,500 dwelling units of various categories and public building including community centre, auditorium, shopping centre, school, stadium, swimming pool, foregner's hostel, parks & play grounds and others. The project, completed in 1992, required site development, landscaping, horticulturing, infrastructure and other facilities with in the boundary limits for the construction of township with community facilities. The Scope of work covered land utilisation plan for Industrial units, residential, recreation, institutional, other utilities such as roads, surface drainage, water supply, overhead tanks, sewerage, fire fighting, telecommunication, community center, health center, etc..
Medak District
Other Medak District industries include chemicals, paper , edible oil, pharmaceutical bulk drugs, and sugar. The Export Promotion Industrial Park in Medak District has an area of 300 acres, and the Garment Complex at Gundla Pochampally in Medak District has an area of 170 acres. The Nagarjuna Agricultural Reserach and Development Institute (NARDI) has a 107-acre research farm, situated at Wargal, Medak District, 50 km from Hyderabad on the Rajiv Gandhi Highway. GVK Group Novopan Industries Ltd. operates a three layere particle board manufacturing unit in Patancheru, Medak district of Andhra Pradesh. Aurobindo Pharma has two manufacturing facilities in Medak District which are dedicated to independent product lines of drug intermediates, quinolones and sterile cephalosporin. Nagarjuna Steels Limited, Patancheru, Medak district, was established in 1974. NSL has grown to become a premium manufacturer of cold rolled steel strips and cold rolled formed sections. NSL is one of India's largest manufacturer of cold rolled strips.
Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corp (APGENCO) has implemented the 2x 7.5 MW Singur hydel project at the head of Singur dam across river Manjira in Medak district. The project, estimated to cost Rs 405.8 Million was financed by the governments of AP and Karnataka as well as funds from power finance Corp (Rs. 160 million). BHEL supplied the turbines and Generators. The first 7.5 MW unit was commissioned in December 1999 while the second unit was commissioned in January 2000.
In the district of Medak more than 100,000 acres of land have been put to fallow in the last ten years almost as a direct result of public distribution system (PDS) rice coming from the resource-rich belt-like coastal Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
Under the Integrated Rural Development Program, rural women have been the center of attention in various development programs. The Deccan Development Society (DDS) is an NGO which has been active in the poor and drought prone Deccan plateau of Andhra Pradesh. The society has initiated many programs and projects for the development, empowerment and education of the rural poor in the Medak District. In spite of 50 years of independence, Matendla [a village of around 5000 people] in Medak district, Andhra Pradesh state had no school until July 1998. As a result the literacy rate and education level in this village was less than 5 per cent. This village is in an area that is considered backward by Indian standards.
A prehistoric cult spot with cave paintings dating back to neolithic times is located near Patancheru at Edithanur, Medak District (80 km from Hyderabad).
Medak, one of the 10 districts of Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh has forests, which are of the southern tropical dry deciduous type account for about 10% of the total geographical area. The Manjira Sanctuary in Medak District, located 50 kms by road from Hyderabad, is a 20 sq kms riverine habitat supporting marsh crocodiles and a variety of waterbirds. The Pocharam Sanctuary in Medak and Nizamabad districts, 120 kms by road from Hyderabad. has an area of 130 sq kms. The mixed dry deciduous forest includes patches of scrub and grassy blanks. Terrain is undulatng with low hills and small water pools. Animals found are Panther, Sloth bear, Wild Boar, Cheetal, Samber, Chowsinga, Chinkara (varieties of Deer family), Nilgai, Hyena, Jackal, Python, Ducks, Teals, Storks, Patridges and Quails.
