Formerly tied to 3rd Academy, the Yunnan Space Group was established 1969 as a Third Line unit within Yunnan province. It moved to Kunming in 1987, though its current responsibilities are unclear. The Group manages six factories and eight companies with a total staff of 3,500. Civilian products include household refrigerators and freezers and motor vehicles and equipment.
On 18 May 2004, the Logistics Department of the Armed Police Force signed an purchasing contract with Yunnan Space Industry Corporation to purchase 70 self-propelled cooking vehicles from the said corporation. This is an important measure taken by the department to to upgrade the catering service for their officers and men.
To deal with contingency is an important task of the Armed Police Force. In order to solve the problem of food and drink supply for on-duty officers and men, the logistics department and armaments department of the Armed Police Force invested nearly 100 million yuan to procure a batch of equipment, such as food fast delivery vehicles, insulated vans, cooking trailers and gas stoves.
In 2003, they teamed up with Yunnan Space Industry Corporation to develop a multi-function self-propelled cooking vehicle, which is low in noise and advanced in performance. This type of self-propelled cooking vehicle can prepare meals for 150 persons in 45 minutes.
Once the said 70 self-propelled cooking vehicles are distributed to the on-duty troops, a support mode with self-propelled cooking vehicles, food fast delivery vehicles, refrigerator cars as the backbone, cooking trailers as the support, gas stoves and unit boxes of field provisions as the supplement will be basically formed for the on-duty armed police troops, which means on-duty troops would be able to have hot meals all the time, and the practice of burying the pots to prepare meals is over.
