PORT HUENEME, Calif. (NNS) -- Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Port Hueneme engineers served as sensor mission managers in support of the Missile Defense Agency's (MDA) participation in the U.S. Air Force's "Glory Trip 199" Minuteman III launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in Lompoc, Calif. June 29.

The mission was an operational test to verify the Minuteman III system's reliability and accuracy.

The test was also part of a continuing program to evaluate and demonstrate the operational readiness of the nation's ballistic missile defense system (BMDS). The data collected will be used for improving sensor capabilities and will serve as a risk reduction effort for future BMDS tests.

"A quick post-launch analysis indicates that our participating sensors and external sensors satisfied their respective element objectives," said Imtiaj (Russell) Ahmed, NSWC Port Hueneme's Glory Trip 199 sensor mission manager.

NSWC Port Hueneme's air dominance engineers support MDA's sensors directorate by overseeing the planning and test execution of ground and flight test missions for an array of sensors and external sensors. Their oversight has led to the success of several missions and the deployment of key radars in defense of the nation and its allies.

NSWC Port Hueneme is a field activity of Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA).
