PLA Daily 2004-03-15
BERLIN, March 13 (Xinhuanet) -- The United States is planning to reduce its existing nuclear arsenal in Europe, according to the latest issue of the German weekly Der Spiegel.
A story in the magazine quoted NATO Supreme Commander James Jones as revealing the news to Belgian senators in Brussels last week in a surprising "off-hand" remark.
"There is going to be a significant reduction" in the US nuclear arsenal in Europe, the general was quoted as saying, without giving further details.
The United States deployed thousands of nuclear weapons in Europe during the Cold War era and removed most of them under a US-Soviet disarmament agreement.
Military experts believe that the Americans still have some 200B-61 nuclear bombs in Europe and some of them may have been storedin US military bases in Germany, Der Spiegel said.
Pentagon is currently reviewing the restructuring of US military forces, which may lead to the closure of some of bases inGermany and other western Europe nations.
