(If confirmed, will fill political-military affairs post) (230) Washington -- President Clinton has named veteran foreign service officer Eric D. Newsom to be Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs. If confirmed by the Senate, Newsom will be responsible for supervision of arms control, non-proliferation regional security and export control policy matters. Following is the White House text: (begin text) THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the Press Secretary June 19, 1998 PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES ERIC D. NEWSOM AS ASSISTANT SECRETARY FOR POLITICAL-MILITARY AFFAIRS AT THE US DEPARTMENT OF STATE The President today announced his intent to nominate Eric D. Newsom to be Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs. Mr. Eric D. Newsom, of Modesto, California, has served nearly 30 years in the federal government, as a Foreign Service Officer and as a staff member of the US Senate, and is currently at the State Department. Mr. Newsom received a BA in History in 1965, and an MA in History in 1967, from the University of California at Berkeley. The Assistant Secretary of State assists the Secretary and the Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security Affairs in discharging the Secretary's responsibilities for continuous supervision and general direction of arms control, non-proliferation, regional security, and export control policy matters.
