USIA CONGRESSIONAL REPORT, MONDAY, JANUARY 20, 1997 (SFRC unanimously endorses Albright)

SFRC ENDORSES MADELEINE ALBRIGHT AS SECRETARY OF STATE

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted unanimously January 20 to confirm Madeleine Albright to be the first woman Secretary of State of the United States. Full Senate approval is expected by January 22.

The committee met briefly in the Capitol as the crowds gathered outside for President Clinton's second inaugural. The 12-0 vote, with six other committee members expected to add their approval later in the day, was the first vote on new members of Clinton's second-term Cabinet.

Sen. Joseph Biden, Democrat of Delaware, ranking Democrat on the committee, said he expects the Albright nomination to "sail through the Senate as it did through the committee. This is the first and most visible example of bipartisanship."

If confirmed by the full Senate as expected, Albright would be the highest-ranking woman ever to serve in the U.S. Government. NNNN
