The Associated Press. For May 8, 1997
Beyond the view of all but a handful of lawmakers and top defense and
intelligence officials, the NRO is about to begin a major investment in a
new constellation of smaller, cheaper satellites. The new system will
involve smaller, lighter satellites thrust into space aboard cheaper
rockets. Under the NRO plan, they would provide much
broader global coverage - including the ability to "dwell" over
battlefields and provide a running stream of images.
House Republicans push bill to close Energy Dept.

House Republicans introduced legislation Thursday to eliminate the
Energy Department and farm out some of its programs to other agencies.
Reps. Todd Tiahrt of Kansas and Ed Royce of California proposed the
bill which they said would save about $5 billion a year and would
abolish an unnecessary bureaucracy. The bill would transfer the Energy
Department's nuclear weapons program to the Defense Department and
transfer other functions to the Interior Department and the Army Corp
of Engineers. Similar legislation failed last year.
