Conference on disarmament fails to make progress

The U.N-sponsored Conference on Disarmament ended its first two-month session of 1997 Thursday without having made any substantial progress, its chairman said. Grigori Berdennikov, Russia's ambassador and current chairman, called on the forum's 61 members to break the deadlock and launch negotiations later this year on halting production of nuclear bomb-making fissile material. The body, which resumes May 15, also faces major hurdles to starting its own negotiations for a global ban on anti-personnel landmines.

U.S. lawmakers ask Clinton to push for Vanunu release

A group of House Democrats asked President Clinton Thursday to push for the release of Mordechai Vanunu, a former nuclear technician convicted of spying against Israel. In a letter to the president, 13 lawmakers said Vanunu, who has been imprisoned in Israel for more than a decade, should be freed for humanitarian reasons. Vanunu was convicted of treason for revealing that Israel had built a stockpile of nuclear weapons. The lawmakers believe Vanunu has suffered enough for what he believed to be an act of conscience.
