SSDC's Targets Director Promoted

During a special ceremony at the U.S. Army Space and Strategic Defense Command (SSDC)-Huntsville this month, Lt. Gen. Edward G. Anderson III, SSDC's commanding general, promoted Dennis L. Patrick to the rank of Colonel. Col. Patrick is Director of the Targets, Test and Evaluation Directorate at SSDC.

In this capacity, Col. Patrick is responsible for development, fabrication, and launch operations for ballistic missile targets for Ballistic Missile Defense Organization programs. His organization also provides test planning support for developmental testing of ballistic missile defense programs and payload development for theater and strategic threat representative reentry vehicles.

Just recently, he was responsible for two successful launches of Scud-like targets launched out of Aur Atoll against improved PATRIOT missiles launched from Meck Island in the Kwajalein Atoll in the central Pacific Ocean. All his Hera targets performed perfectly in all Theater High Altitude Area Defense test flights.

A native of Ohio, Col. Patrick graduated from the United States Military Academy and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry in June 1974, attended Flight School in 1976, and became a member of the Aviation Branch when it was formally established.

He has held a wide variety of command and staff positions culminating in his current assignment. His military education includes completion of the Infantry Officers Basic and Advanced Courses, the Rotary Wing Aviators Course, the Defense Systems Management College Program Managers Course, the Marine Corps Command and General Staff College, and the Army War College.

His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (with three oak leaf clusters), the Expert Infantryman's Badge, and the Senior Army Aviator Badge.

Col. Patrick is married to the former Cyndy Hastings, also from Ohio. They have two children, Josh, age 18, and Jason, age 14.
