NPT review preparatory meeting to be held with Iran participation

United Nations, New York, May 3, IRNA -- The preliminary meeting of a review conference on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty will be held in New York on Monday with participation of Iranian delegation.
The Iranian delegation will be headed by deputy foreign minister for Legal and International Affairs Mohammad-Ali Hosseini and a number of senior officials from Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization as well as Iran’s representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Under the provisions of the Treaty, a review conference is held every five-year. The NPT review conference will be held in Vienna, Austria, in 2010.
Participants of the preparatory meeting would exchange views on nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, peaceful use of nuclear energy and ensuring non-nuclear states that nuclear countries would never use nuclear weapons against them as well as the issue of a nuclear-free Middle East.
Some analysts are pessimistic about the outcome of such meetings arguing that they would lead to nowhere because of the mounting pressures from big powers to maintain their special privilege and their disregard for obligations required by NPT.
