US blocks UN disarmament commission agenda
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
New York, UN, April 14, IRNA – The US government blocked a UN Disarmament commission meeting agenda to oppose a proposal by 118 member countries of Non-Aligned Movement ( NAM) to discuss world nuclear disarmament.
A diplomat at the United Nations told IRNA on Tuesday that the US representative in the Commission is trying to influence the issue of the world nuclear disarmament by proposing other issues to be put on the agenda of the meeting.
The diplomat, who asked not to be named, said by the US opposition the agenda will not be approved, so the meeting will be actually cancelled.
He continued that Obama’s government representative opposition with starting disarmament negotiations shows that the old policy of the former president George Bush in blocking international negotiations on global issues will continue in the new US government, too.
The disarmament commission is one of the subordinate bodies of the UN General Assembly which holds meeting for two weeks annually and discusses issues concerning disarmament and international security.
The opening meeting started here on Monday afternoon ( local time), but the US opposition with the agenda disrupted continuation of the meeting.
The US government has more than five thousand atomic bombs in its arsenal.
