An Iranian envoy has urged countries possessing nuclear weapons to fulfill their commitments concerning full disarmament.
Addressing the preliminary conference on the Non-Proliferation Treaty, he said, "Unfortunately, nuclear countries have not taken any measure to fulfill their commitments based on Article 6 of the NPT and document of the Conference 2000."
"The US and Britain, in particular, intend to modernize their nuclear weapons and have started new plans to produce new generations of nuclear weapons," he added.
"Nuclear states have deployed nuclear weapons in non-nuclear countries including European members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). It is in violation of Article one of the treaty concerning the ban on proliferation of weapons.
"Cooperation of nuclear countries with the Zionist regime will boost its military capabilities, and this is another breach of commitments by nuclear states," the member of the Iranian delegation said.
During the meeting, other participants, in separate statements, also stressed that countries which possess nuclear weapons should take practical steps towards disarmament.
They said 13 steps mentioned in the final document of the Conference 2000 should be completely implemented for disarmament, adding that non-proliferation of nuclear weapons would not be aterialized without dismantling of nuclear weapons owned by nuclear countries.
The preliminary conference on the NPT opened in Vienna on Monday.
