Tymoshenko Faction Votes No Confidence In President

9 September 2005 -- A day after Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko dismissed the government, the parliamentary faction of former Prime Minister Yuliya Tymoshenko today voted no confidence in Yushchenko.

Anatoliy Semynoga of Tymoshenko's faction read a statement at a session of the Verkhovna Rada.

"The dismissal of Yuliya Tymoshenko's government is used to cover up the shameful dismissal of the corrupt cronies of the president and people close to him," he said. " We, the faction of the Yuliya Tymoshenko Bloc, 42 people's deputies of Ukraine, declare our disagreement with the decision of the Ukrainian president to dismiss Yuliya Tymoshenko's government, which he himself has described as the most effective government in Ukrainian history."

Tymoshenko is due to speak live on Ukraine's Inter TV channel this evening.

Yushchenko sacked Tymoshenko's team amid allegations of high-level corruption which prompted the resignations of several ministers and top officials.

Yushchenko today met with parliamentary faction leaders and urged them to work with the future cabinet, while new acting Prime Minister Yuriy Yekhanurov met with outgoing ministers and political leaders on forming a new government.
