Nuclear Reactor Shuts Down In Ukraine

23 August 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Officials said today a nuclear reactor in western Ukraine shut down automatically when sensors indicated a malfunction in a pump in its cooling system.

The state-run Energoatom nuclear operator said in a statement that there was no increase in radiation levels at the troublesome reactor No. 2 in the Khmelnytskyy nuclear-power plant.

The statement added that the faulty pump's valves were shut down manually.

The No. 2 reactor at Khmelnytskyy has experienced a series of automatic shutdowns since its launch last year.

Ukraine operates 15 nuclear reactors, and says it is committed to modernizing all of them.
