RIA Novosti
KIEV, February 23 (RIA Novosti) - Law enforcers are continuing searching for the stolen Strela 3M anti-air defense complex and 2 missiles in Ukraine, the press service of the country's emergencies ministry told RIA Novosti.
Investigation has been opened into the incident.
The system was found missing on Tuesday at about 4 a.m. local time (5 a.m. Moscow time) at a naval depot near the village of Chernomorskoye when 2 unknown individuals were seen while trying to enter the depot.
The unknown persons did not obey the sentry's order to stop, dropped their tools and vanished.
While examining the depot, the sentry saw that a security seal had been torn off on the gate of one of the depots, while the lock was missing on another depot's gate. The sentry called the sentry commander and the military unit commanders.
"To check the assets and weapons at the depot where the lock was torn off, the unit commander took an inventory and discovered that a missile launcher, two Strela 3M anti-air defense system missile cases and missiles were missing," the Ukrainian defense ministry's press service told RIA Novosti.
The incident is being investigated into, and an inventory of the military unit's other depots is being taken.
Strela 3Ms can hit aerial targets at a distance of 3.5-4 kilometers.
