On Thursday, September 25, Ukraine's Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiha took part in the Second Meeting of G20 Foreign Ministers, held under the chairmanship of the Republic of South Africa.
In his address, Andrii Sybiha informed the participants about the escalation of the war unleashed by Russia and the risks that Moscow's aggression against Ukraine poses to the world.
"This meeting is taking place against the backdrop of a global crisis - a crisis of security, international law, and justice. If we do not resolve this crisis now, it will only deepen. Everyone in this room will face its consequences, because if we allow international law, security, and justice to be destroyed in Ukraine, no one will be safe anywhere in the world," the Minister noted.
The Foreign Minister emphasized that the involvement of Iran, North Korea, and Russia's support for these regimes threaten stability in the Middle East and Asia. According to him, Russian mercenaries in Africa are looting natural resources, dragging people into war, and bringing destabilization and chaos.
"Worst of all, regimes around the world are watching Russia's actions. If Moscow gets away with everything, others might as well. They can violate international law, seize other people's lands by force, and not face a strong global response. This scenario may look attractive to potential aggressors in other parts of the world. Smaller and less protected countries are especially at risk," he stressed.
Andrii Sybiha underlined that Ukraine respects the UN Charter and seeks to end the war this year, but Russia shows no signs of being ready for a ceasefire, genuine negotiations, or peace. The Minister added that Putin is doing everything possible to prolong the war, escalating terror against Ukrainians and dragging other countries into the conflict.
"If we all take a principled stance of rejecting aggression and war, Moscow will surely hear the voice of the international community. We are not asking you to choose between Ukraine and Russia. We are asking you to stand by the UN Charter. Your position is critically important for achieving peace and has a special impact on Russia," the diplomat remarked.
The Foreign Minister informed his colleagues that Ukraine sees evidence of third states helping Russia circumvent sanctions and will respond resolutely together with its partners. He stated that only joint pressure will force Russia into dialogue and diplomacy.
Andrii Sybiha expressed deep gratitude to South Africa's G20 chairmanship for supporting peace efforts and to South Africa's Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola for his principled stance.
The Minister also thanked all countries that sincerely support a just peace, the UN Charter, and Ukraine's territorial integrity — even when that support is quiet and not public.
"We see and value your principled position. We hope that the issue of a just peace will remain at the center of attention during future G20 events. And we will be very glad to see President Zelenskyy and Ukraine represented at them," he said.
