On 22 September 2025, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Baiba Braže, participated in the informal meeting of EU Foreign Affairs Ministers in New York, where the ministers engaged in a discussion with global partners - the foreign ministers of Brazil, India, and Mexico - on Russia's aggression against Ukraine and developments in the Middle East.
The Foreign Ministers of the Baltic and Nordic regional cooperation group (NB6) underlined in their joint address to global partners that Russia's aggression against Ukraine is a blatant violation of international law and the UN Charter. Russia must stop its war of aggression against Ukraine so that a comprehensive, just and lasting peace can be achieved in Ukraine. The Baltic states and the Nordic countries are calling on their global partners to put pressure on Russia towards this goal. Russia must stop its fabricated statements about a threat to Russia's security. Russian drones and aircraft are the ones violating the airspace of EU Member States and posing a real security threat.
The Baltic states and the Nordic countries also pointed to the disastrous humanitarian situation in Gaza and the escalation on the West Bank, which highlights the issue of the need for a two-state solution. The war and human suffering in Gaza must end. All hostages must be released immediately and unconditionally. Hamas can have no role in the future governance of Palestine.
The participants of the meeting were addressed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, on behalf of the NB6 Baltic-Nordic regional cooperation group. Denmark is this year's coordinator of the group. The NB6 format comprises Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Sweden.
The partner countries underlined their readiness to cooperate with the EU in strengthening multilateralism and the international rules-based order. They presented their vision for the way ahead to end Russia's aggression against Ukraine, as well as to overcome the crisis in the Middle East. Opportunities were also discussed for cooperation in trade, digital and climate issues.
The partner countries participated in the meeting at the invitation of the EU High Representative Kaja Kallas to provide an opportunity for EU Member States to build dialogue with global partners and convey the EU's messages, expressing EU Member States' positions on major crises and conflicts that will be high on the agenda of the UN General Assembly High-level Week.
The EU Foreign Affairs Council deals with matters relating to EU external action, including the common foreign and security policy, the European security and defence policy, external trade and development cooperation. The main role of the Council is to ensure the unity, consistency and effectiveness of the EU's external action.
