Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk claims Russian drones violated the country's airspace during an aerial attack on neighboring Ukraine, calling it "an act of aggression."

In a post on X, Tusk said that the drones, which he claimed posed a direct threat, were intercepted and shot down by the Polish military, following repeated violations of the country's airspace overnight.

"Last night we experienced a violation of Polish airspace by a significant number of Russian drones," he said, adding that the Polish military has used weapons against the "invading objects".

Tusk further noted that an "operation related to multiple violations of Polish airspace is underway," adding that the government plans to convene an "extraordinary" cabinet meeting to address the issue.

He also claimed that the "large-scale provocation" was aimed at both the European Union and NATO member states.

In a post on X, NATO chief spokesperson Allison Hart also stated that air defenses of the US-led military alliance assisted in countering numerous drones that violated Polish airspace overnight.

Hart also said NATO chief Mark Rutte is in touch with Polish leadership and the military alliance is consulting closely with Poland.

She went on to say that NATO ambassadors are set to discuss the alliance's response to the drone incidents during their regular meeting on Wednesday morning.

The Polish military also reported that fighter jets were promptly deployed as more than a dozen drones entered the country's airspace, with both Polish and NATO military aircraft mobilized to ensure airspace safety.

"Polish and allied aircraft are operating in our airspace, while ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance systems have been brought to the highest state of readiness," the operational command said.

An operation to collect debris from the intercepted drones is currently underway, it added.

Poland, a NATO member and a major supporter of Ukraine, hosts over a million Ukrainian refugees and serves as a key transit point for Western humanitarian and military aid to the war-torn country.

The war in Ukraine has plunged the already deteriorated relations between Russia and Poland, Ukraine's largest neighbor on its western border, to its lowest levels.

Last month, Warsaw alleged that a Russian military drone flew into its airspace and exploded in farmland in eastern Poland, calling the incident a "provocation".

In 2023, Poland also claimed that a Russian missile had crossed into its airspace to strike Ukraine.
