President of the Republic of Lithuania
September 03, 2025
On Wednesday, President Gitanas Nausėda attended a meeting of the leaders of the Nordic and Baltic countries (NB8) and Ukraine in Copenhagen. The leaders discussed the situation in Ukraine, international efforts to achieve peace as well as NB8 countries' continued support for Ukraine.
The President emphasized that Russia's ongoing missile strikes against Ukraine clearly show that the Kremlin has no intentions of ending its aggression. According to Mr. Nausėda, this reality obliges the international community to unite, strengthen Ukraine and ensure peace.
The President underlined that Lithuania is consistently increasing its military support to Ukraine and contributing to the strengthening of Ukraine's defense industry. Support to Ukraine since the start of the war has exceeded €1.6 billion. Lithuania will continue to allocate at least 0.25% of its GDP for this purpose annually. In 2025, an additional €30 million will be allocated to the PURL (NATO Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List) initiative to finance priority American weapons for Ukraine. Funding is also being planned for a German-US bilateral initiative on Patriot air defense systems.
In Copenhagen, the President also stressed the need to speed up Ukraine's accession to the European Union - to start negotiations as soon as possible and commit to a membership date no later than 2030.
In Copenhagen, the leaders paid a lot of attention to security guarantees for Ukraine. According to the Lithuanian leader, the guarantees must be comprehensive, covering air, land and sea defense, and sufficient to deter Russia from further aggression. The President reiterated Lithuania's determination to contribute troops and military training capabilities to the joint efforts of the Coalition of the Willing.
The leaders also discussed the activities of the Coalition with a view to ensuring its credibility and readiness to respond quickly and effectively. The President also emphasized the importance of transatlantic unity: "Only by working together can the United States and Europe achieve real and lasting results."
