Norway provides air defense worth seven billion kroner to Ukraine
Government of Norway
Press release | Date: 24/08/2025
Norway is contributing approximately seven billion kroner for air defense. The air defense systems will be delivered from Germany to Ukraine.
"Together with Germany, we are now ensuring that Ukraine receives powerful air defense systems. Germany and Norway are working very closely together to support Ukraine in its fight to defend the country and protect the civilian population against Russian air attacks," says Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
Norway and Germany are funding two Patriot systems including missiles. In addition, Norway is contributing to the procurement of air defense radars from the German manufacturer Hensoldt and air defense systems from Kongsberg.
"Air defense is also crucial for protecting military units and infrastructure. Now, together with Germany, we are further stepping up our efforts," says Minister of Defence Tore O. Sandvik.
Protecting Ukrainian lives
Earlier this summer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre met and agreed that the two countries would cooperate on donating two complete Patriot systems that Germany already possesses to Ukraine. The systems are currently located in Germany and will be delivered to Ukraine as soon as possible. The United States has confirmed that it will replace the donated systems, and Norway has committed to contributing financially to their replacement.
"Building on our excellent cooperation with Norway, we are very grateful that we are collaborating on this assistance measure and will thus significantly strengthen Ukraine's air defense capabilities together," says German Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius.
"This is a major investment in effective air defense. The support will give Ukraine vital tools to protect Ukrainian lives and contribute to a stronger defense," says Sandvik.
Patriot is a highly effective air defense system that can counter several threats, especially tactical ballistic missiles. These missiles have great destructive power and cannot be stopped by ordinary air defense. Patriot features long-range radar, extremely fast missiles, and long range. These qualities combined make Patriot capable of intercepting ballistic missiles.
To strengthen Ukraine's air defense, Germany is financing a large contract with the manufacturer Hensoldt for the delivery of the modern TRML-4D air defense radar to Ukraine. Radars provide improved sensor coverage and thereby make other air defense systems more effective.
Germany has also financed a major contract for the delivery of the short-range air defense system Typhon-2 from Kongsberg. This is a cost-effective system and a powerful further development and improvement of Typhon-1, of which Norway donated ten systems last year. The system helps to fill the gap between short- and medium-range air defense and thereby creates a more comprehensive defense against aerial threats. Norway is contributing by donating key components of Typhon-2 from the Norwegian Armed Forces.
