President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine says Kiev will categorically reject any proposal involving the cession of territory to Russia.
Zelensky made these comments on Saturday shortly after US President Donald Trump announced plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin next week in Alaska, where he will raise the idea of "swapping territories" to bring an end to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
In response to this announcement, the Ukrainian leader expressed concerns that Ukraine might be excluded from negotiations related to a potential ceasefire framework with Russia.
He remarked, "Any decisions made against us, or without Ukraine's involvement, are decisions against peace. They will achieve nothing."
Zelensky also emphasized that Kiev "will not surrender our land to occupiers."
Reports indicate that US and Russian officials are currently discussing a deal in which Russia would agree to cease its attacks on Ukraine in exchange for territorial concessions.
Ukraine and its European allies have consistently opposed any agreements that involve ceding territory—specifically Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhia—to Russia.
Conversely, Russia insists that any agreement must require Kiev to relinquish some of the territories it has seized since 2014.
Since the onset of the war in early 2022, the US and the European Union have provided extensive military, financial, and diplomatic support to Ukraine, which some argue has prolonged the conflict by enabling Kiev to continue its fight rather than seeking a diplomatic resolution.
