News story | Date: 05/08/2025
Norway, together with Sweden and Denmark, will contribute with funds to support the new initiative to secure highly prioritised American defence equipment for Ukraine through NATO.
Norway warmly welcomes USA and NATO initiative to support Ukraine through the delivery of American defence materials financed by Allies. In order to continue to meet Ukraine's most urgent needs, Sweden, Norway and Denmark will jointly fund one of the first packages under the new initiative Prioritised Ukraine Requirement List (PURL). Together, the countries will finance a package with a total value of 500 million USD.
'This is an important initiative from NATO and the USA. It helps ensure that Ukraine quickly receives crucial military equipment to defend themselves, and it strengthens cooperation between the United States and European countries in their support of Ukraine,' says Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
In July, the US and NATO launched a new initiative for NATO Allies to finance highly requested American defence equipment for Ukraine. The initiative consists of a series of packages, which are assembled by the US in coordination with NATO and Ukraine. The initiative will strengthen Ukrainian air defence, as it includes the delivery of munitions for Patriot air defence systems as well as other urgent requirements.
The Norwegian government will provide NOK 1,5 billion to the new initiative (approximately USD 135 million) in support to this package.
- This summer we have seen Russia relentlessly continue its illegal attacks on Ukraine, along the front line and against civilian targets in the cities. With this support, we want to facilitate Ukraine quickly receiving the equipment the country needs, while at the same time strengthening cooperation within NATO on Ukraine's defence, says Minister of Defence Tore O. Sandvik.
