The occupation of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, Zaporizhzhia NPP, by russia, threatens the renaissance of nuclear energy that is taking place around the world.
This was emphasised by the Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko during a discussion at the event "Clean Industrial Transformation: Ukraine's Strategic Role in the EU Agenda" held in Rome on the eve of the URC 2025 Ukraine Recovery Conference.
"A series of global companies invest in nuclear energy. And everyone has their explanations why... One of them is investments in artificial intelligence, which is almost impossible without nuclear power. And it is critical that we are witnessing a real revival of nuclear energy, and I am excited that Ukraine is one of the countries that is following this path and creating opportunities for a nuclear renaissance," the Minister said.
At the same time, German Galushchenko stressed that there are real threats to this progress.
"But what is happening now in many countries can be destroyed in one day - by one accident at ZNPP. And this is indeed a threat that exists every day - not only because of the Ukrainian nuclear power plant, not only because the russians illegally seized it and still control it. This will have consequences for the entire global development of nuclear energy," the Minister said.
The Minister of Energy noted that the basic principles of nuclear and radiation safety were not being observed at the russian-occupied plant, and representatives of the IAEA mission at ZNPP do not have full access to all plant facilities to monitor the situation.
"The situation with Zaporizhzhya NPP is a key issue for nuclear power in the world today. For us, it is a matter of recovery. For the world, it is an issue of nuclear safety, security and investment in the nuclear sector," summarised German Galushchenko.
