The SSU Counterintelligence has thwarted a terrorist attack against civilians in western Ukraine. As a result of preemptive actions in Rivne, an enemy agent who was preparing an explosion in one of the region's most popular hotels has been apprehended.

The perpetrator, acting on orders from russian special services, left an improvised explosive device in one of the rooms of the complex.

To record the explosion, the woman installed a mini camera in the room with remote access for the occupiers.

The russians planned to remotely activate the IED by calling the phone that was attached to the bomb.

The SSU Counterintelligence caught the enemy agent as she was rushing out of the hotel. Following that, the SSU team defused the IED.

The investigation established that the terrorist attack was prepared by a 49-year-old local woman, recruited by the occupiers through a dating website.

After the recruitment, the agent received coordinates of the hiding places. From those, she took the finished explosives and the key to a hotel room booked in advance under a false name.

Following her russian handler's instructions, the terrorist then purchased materials at household markets to make another IED for new attacks.

A phone with evidence of her work for the enemy and components for a second explosive device were seized during searches of the suspect's home.

SSU investigators notified the detainee of suspicion under Articles 15.2 and 258.2 of the CCU (completed attempt to commit a terrorist act, by a group, upon prior conspiracy).

The suspect is in custody and faces up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.

The special operation was carried out by the SSU Office in Rivne region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor's Office.
