SSU detains Defense Forces reserve lieutenant colonel who on FSB general's orders spied in Sumy region (video)

The Security Service of Ukraine foiled the enemy's attempt to set up an agent network near the front line in Sumy oblast. As a result of the special operation, a deep undercover FSB agent who was spying near the front line and forming his own group of informants has been apprehended.

The traitor is a former military officer, a reserve lieutenant colonel of one of the components of Ukraine's Defense Forces. After being legally discharged from service in 2023, he began cooperating with russia.

Given the individual's military rank and combat experience, he was recruited by one of the chiefs of an FSB border directorate. The officer of the russian special service was awarded a general's rank for the successful recruitment.

According to the investigation, the asset was part of an FSB agent network that was dismantled in April this year in Sumy region

At that time, the SSU arrested a russian citizen and his accomplice who were gathering intelligence for russian saboteurs to break through into Shostka district.

The agent, the lieutenant colonel, acted separately from the others. He collected data on locations of the Defense Forces fighting on the front lines.

To do this, he used his acquaintances among Ukrainian soldiers, with whom he had befriended after leaving the service.

At the same time, he was helping his handler create a new network of agents in the border area of Sumy region from among current and former military personnel.

The agent's task was to identify 'like-minded people' among his acquaintances. The russian service was to carry out further recruitment. In case of successful 'interviews', the agent was to send the candidates to russia for instruction.

The SSU detained the agent while he was recruiting a new member for the enemy cell. His phone, containing evidence of his work for the FSB, was seized.

SSU investigators notified the detained enemy accomplice of suspicion under two Articles of the CCU:

• 111.2 (high treason, committed under martial law);
• 332.2 (illegal transportation of persons across the state border of Ukraine).

The suspect is in custody and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

The operation was carried out by the SSU Office in Sumy region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor's Office.
